What to Expect at PDEC
The diabetes team at the Stollery Pediatric Diabetes Education Centre (PDEC) work together with families to provide support for individuals living with childhood diabetes. Our team of doctors, dietitians, nurse educators, clerks, and social workers are here to support your family.
You will meet with a pediatric endocrinologist (kids diabetes doctor) to discuss your child’s diabetes diagnosis, review the treatment plan, and arrange your diabetes training at PDEC.
Step One
Your family will receive education for 3 half days with the diabetes team, where you will learn how to safely manage your child’s diabetes. It is important that all primary caregivers in your child’s life attend this training. You will receive educational materials for reference and teaching.
Step Two
The diabetes team will continue to support your family as you become more confident in managing your child’s diabetes care needs. This will include a virtual follow up education class 2-4 weeks after diagnosis and a virtual follow up appointment with the dietitian.
Step Three
Your child will be booked into a follow-up clinic appointment every 3-6 months at PDEC. These visits can take up to 1.5hours. You may see a combination of diabetes educators (nurse, dietitian and social worker) as well as your diabetes doctor. At each visit we will monitor your child’s growth and diabetes care. We will answer any questions you have about diabetes management, adjust insulin doses, explore any challenges affecting diabetes management, and discuss strategies to support your child.
